LORD VISHNU BROKE THE PRIDE OF HIS VAAHAN GARUDA

Matali chooses Sumukha as his son-in-law and Indra blesses him long life and Garuda praises himself in front of Lord

From my previous post, we came to know about how did Lord Parashurama gave an instance of Nara breaking the ego of Dambhodbhava in order to let Duryodhana be aware of the penalties of considering himself best than others. After that Kambhya sage who used to be also existing in the courtroom of Hastinapura kingdom additionally cited the mighty Garuda whom Lord Vishnu had taught a lesson once for his self-esteem. I will explain that in this post. It all started out from the incident when Matali went to Nagaloka to locate his son in law.

First of all, let me provide you a small brief about Nagaloka. We all understand that the total universe is divided into three components acknowledged as, 'heaven', 'earth', and 'patala'. Patala is also regarded to be more captivating than Heaven. Patala is divided into seven lokas and Nagaloka is the lowest amongst them. Below patala there is 'Naraka' or hell. Nagaloka consists of all the snakes and ruled via snake king Vasuki.

Matali was the charioteer of Lord Indra. He had a lovely and nicely behaved daughter named Gunakesi. Matali searched for an ideal groom for her in the whole heaven and earth but no one matched her divine beauty. Matali wished to go to Nagaloka to find a worthy son in law. On his way to Nagaloka, Matali noticed Naradaji who was also going in the direction of the Varunaloka; location of Water king Deity Varuna. Narada also accompanied Matali to Nagaloka after assembly with Varuna deity.

Both Narada and Matali reached a place named Bhogabati in the Nagaloka which was protected by way of the snake king Vasuki. Sesha naga or Adisesha used to live there. Sesha naga; the elder brother of Vasuki was once blessed by Lord Brahma to lift the entire earth on his head due to the fact of his forbearance nature. (It is believed that Lord Vishnu rests on sesha naga which is regarded as Ananta sesha.) Coming back to the story, Narada introduced all the snakes to the Matali there in the Nagaloka. Matali observed one focused, patient, and excellent looking Naga whom he preferred to make his son in law and out of curiosity inquired about his identification to Naradaji. Narada told him that, that naga was recognized as Sumukha; the son of Chikura. Additionally, he cited to Matali that Chikura was recently consumed via Garuda. Matali, however, Gave the marriage proposal to Sumukha's grandfather Aryaka there.

(Now Let me remind you all about Mighty Garuda, who once took away the nectar from Indra by means of defeating him and all the deities and Later gave the nectar back to Indra after accepting his friendship. Garuda was that time blessed by Lord Vishnu to devour all the snakes and emerge as Lord's Vahaan or mount.)

When mighty Garuda ate up Chikura that time he had also referred to the snakes about ingesting Sumukha the next time he would reach Nagaloka. Considering the reality the Aryaka at the beginning hesitated as he knew that Sumukha's demise was already predestined by Garuda. However, Matali convinced him of a solution that, he himself would request Deity Indra for blessing Sumukha a long life. Then Matali went near Indra along with his son in law Sumukha and Narada. Lord Vishnu was there too. After hearing about the whole thing Lord suggested Indra provide nectar to Sumukha and make him comparable to a deity. Indra keeping in his mind the power of Garuda he did not let Sumukha drink the nectar. Later as per the recommendation of Lord Vishnu, he blessed Sumukha for long life.

After knowing about all this, enraged Garuda reached near Indra and asked Lord Vishnu how could he let a snake have a long life when Lord himself had blessed Garuda to eat all of them. Garuda blamed Lord for creating barriers in his way of living as he had already decided to kill Sumukha before.

Then Garuda instructed Indra that, "I defeated all the deities and killed many daityas with my immense power, regardless of being capable of ruling the triloka, I agreed to serve Lord Vishnu whilst staying in his dhwaja and being his Vahan!" Then Garuda accused each of them of ruining his dignity by means of no longer letting him consume Sumukha and questioned Indra being the king of Triloka letting Lord Vishnu create obstacles for Garuda in such a way.

Out of prideness, Garuda boasted his energy for carrying the potential deity Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu Warned the egoistic Garuda to quit self-admiring and challenging him to lift his only right hand that time. Then Lord Vishnu positioned his right hand on Garuda's shoulder and made him unconscious there through the burden. Lord, in reality, had only kept his hand tenderly on him rather than pressing him down for which Garuda stayed alive at that time. Garuda realized his mistake and Asked for forgiveness. He could understand the godly energy of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu stated Garuda that, "Even the triloka can by no means endure my force!" Garuda had always carried him smoothly since the Lord himself had made it easy for him. He then warned Garuda no longer to repeat the mistake and then he picked up Sumukha in his toe finger and placed him on Garuda's chest. From that time Garuda used to carry Sumukha along with him.

After listening to the story of Mighty Garuda from sage Kambhya, Duryodhana disregarded it whilst laughing.
